Violence Against Women

Image
Violence against women (VAW) appears as one of the country’s pervasive social problems. According to the 2017 National Demographic and Health Survey conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority, one in four Filipino women age 15-49 has experienced physical, emotional or sexual violence by their husband or partner. It is indeed alarming that despite efforts to address the concern, VAW persists. VAW is deemed to be closely linked with the unequal power relation between women and men otherwise known as “gender based violence.” Societal norms and traditions dictate people to think that men are the leaders, pursuers, and providers, and take on the dominant roles in society while women are the nurturers, men’s companions and supporters, and take on the subordinate roles in society. This perception leads men to gain more power over women. Hence, VAW becomes a form of men’s expression of control over women to retain power. As defined by the UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violenc...

PREVENTION OF DRUG ABUSE

Image
PREVENTION OF DRUG ABUSE Abuse of alcohol and drugs is a worldwide problem. In countries of the South Asian region including Bangladesh, Butan, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, the drugs commonly abused are heroin, cannabis, opium, and pharmaceutical preparations. Abuse of alcohol and tobacco in combinations with other drugs also is seen in these countries. Abuse of drugs not only poses a threat to the individual’s health but consequently gives rise to socioeconomic problems. Alcohol and drug abuse cause stress in a family and drain national resources.  Families suffer due to cultural and social factors of drug behavior, including their own understanding of the disease process and the addict’s behavior due to drug abuse, draining of family resources, shrinking from responsibilities, sickness and death faced as a consequence of drug abuse, extramarital relations, distortion of interpersonal family relationships, and violence. Family reaction to drug addiction includes denial, blam...

Let the Earth breath : Saving the Earth .

Image
LET US SAVE OUR EARTH TOGETHER! What's happening in our Earth? Thousands of studies conducted by researchers around the world have documented increases in temperature at Earth’s surface, as well as in the atmosphere and oceans. Many other aspects of global climate are changing as well. High temperature extremes and heavy precipitation events are increasing, glaciers and snow cover are shrinking, and sea ice is retreating. Seas are warming, rising, and becoming more acidic, and flooding is become more frequent along the U.S. coastline. Growing seasons are longer, and large wildfires occur more frequently. Many species are moving to new locations, and changes in the seasonal timing of important biological events are occurring in response to climate change. The Problem   Over 1,000 scientists from 25 different countries staged protests last week following the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s new report. The report warned that rapid and deep cuts to gre...

Why HUMSS is the best strand?

Image
HUMSS strand is not as scary as we thought . There were a lot of students before, including me, saying that Humss is a very scary track because it's all about confidence, public speaking, and essay writing. Many students state that this strand is extremely difficult, particularly for introverted individuals. But if you haven't noticed yet, students who choose this strand are aspiring to serve our society and will be dealing with a lot of people. Let's not just look at the negative side of this strand, let's just look at the brighter side of the Humss strand. This strand is not difficult if you love it.  So, why can I say that the HUMSS strand is the best among the other strands? It is because HUMSS establishes students' creative thinking skills, reasoning, and the best ways to ask questions. These are fundamental skills that allow us to perform well in all fields, from art and music to business and politics. HUMSS also taught us about different cultures and how th...
